Strait Richmond Hospital (SRH) has a locum and full-time opportunities available for family medicine – emergency physicians.  SRH serves the health care needs of the residents of communities in Richmond County and the southern portion of Inverness County.  The facility has 15 medicine beds and 5 restorative care beds that provides inpatient, outpatient, and satellite care. The two regional referral centres for the area include Cape Breton Regional Hospital (located in Sydney – approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes from SRH) and St. Martha’s Regional Hospital (located in Antigonish – approximately 1 hour from SRH). 

The site also houses a number of other interdisciplinary services:

  • community based rehabilitation centre
  • diabetes education
  • diagnostic imaging
  • dietitian
  • emergency department
  • foot care clinic
  • hemodialysis
  • laboratory services
  • mental health & addictions services
  • occupational therapy
  • palliative care
  • physiotherapy
  • social work

The facility also has a number of visiting specialists:

  • cardiology
  • nephrology
  • ophthalmology
  • palliative care

Responsibilities

  • Duties include full scope of practice as an emergency physician providing care to patients within the eastern zone and participating in call.
  • The physician will be responsible to the Zone Department Head for Emergency Medicine for their professional responsibilities and quality of practice, and will operate within the Medical Staff Bylaws of the Nova Scotia Health Authority.

Addiction Medicine -Strait Richmond Recovery Support Centre

About This Opportunity

The Mental Health and Addiction Program (MHAP) at the Strait Richmond Recovery Support Centre is seeking a 0.6 FTE physician (position can be shared between multiple physicians) to work within a collaborative inter-professional clinical team, providing evidence-informed withdrawal management and related mental health and addiction care in an outpatient withdrawal management setting.

Responsibilities

  • assess and manage substance use disorder(s); 
  • work with the clinical team to initiate and monitor withdrawal management protocols;
  • assess and manage other medical and psychiatric disorders as indicated;
  • conduct risk assessments and interventions for suicide, self/harm or harm to others;
  • develop and implement care and discharge plans in collaboration with the client, clinical team, and family;
  • support the facilitation transitions of care across a variety of settings;
  • provide trauma-informed and culturally safe care;
  • provide brief interventions related to substance use and concurrent disorders;
  • maintain timely, clear, and accurate health records in adherence to Nova Scotia Health documentation policies.

Expected Hours

The Physician (s) will work a total of 37.5hrs/week

Workhours will be Monday-Friday onsite between 8:30 am-4:30 pm.

Qualifications

CLINICAL EXPERIENCE

  • Clinical experience in practicing addiction medicine is an asset, but not a requirement
  • Experience working in a medical withdrawal management service is an asset; *If no clinical experience in medical withdrawal management, training and mentoring opportunities are available for those with limited or no clinical experience in this setting.

The community of Port Hawkesbury is seeking a full scope family physician to join their family practice network team in the Cape Breton South region on beautiful Cape Breton Island!  This opportunity offers you the chance to work with a team of physicians, nurse practitioner, social worker, and dietician in a newly constructed (built in 2020) collaborative practice in the heart of the Town of Port Hawkesbury.  Depending on your interests, there is opportunity to work closely with Strait Richmond Hospital (SRH) by covering emergency room shifts or inpatients through the Community Hospital Inpatient Program (CHIP), which allows for a nice work-life balance. 

This region serves the health care needs of the residents of communities in Richmond County and the southern portion of Inverness County.  Located in Evanston, SRH is approximately 80 kilometers from St. Martha’s Regional Hospital (one of the regional level referral centres for the population). Family Physician- L’Ardoise

Dr. Kingston Community Health Centre, located in L’Ardoise, is seeking a full-time family physician to join their local family practice team.  The team works collaboratively together and includes 1 full-time family physician, 1 full-time family practice nurse, 1 full-time nurse practitioner, a visiting dietician, and a visiting social worker.  This opportunity requires participation in nursing home coverage and inpatient care (participating in the CHIP program).  Also, opportunity exists to participate in a variety of other areas that fit your professional interests and skill set including, but not limited to, emergency room coverage, addictions medicine, etc.  Physicians are supported to engage in research and/or teaching positions with Dalhousie University. This clinic utilizes MedAccess as the EMR, and administrative support staff is available to physicians. 

The Dr. Kingston Community Health Centre is approximately 30 minutes from the areas’ local hospital, Strait Richmond Hospital (SRH).  SRH serves residents of Richmond County and the southern portion of Inverness County.  The two regional referral centres for the area include Cape Breton Regional Hospital (located in Sydney) and St. Martha’s Regional Hospital (located in Antigonish).  Both regional hospitals are located approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes away from L’Ardoise.
